Couple separated during freedom struggle meet after 72 years

Kannur: A freedom fighter who was jailed in 1946 by the British, met his first wife after seventy two years.

E.K Narayanan Nambiar, who hails from Kavumbai in Kannur, Kerala, is now 93-years-old and his first wife Sharada is 89-years-old.

Sharada was thirteen and Narayanan was seventeen when they got married.

Narayanan’s father Thaliyan Raman Nambiar headed the Kavumbai rebellion against the British during freedom struggle. In ten months after Narayanan got married, both father and son went absconding, and were later detained and jailed by the British.

When Narayanan was absconding, Sharada went back to her native, as Malabar Special Police were causing her trouble in the name of investigation.

Narayanan served three years in Kannur jail, and a total of eight years in Viyyur and Salem jails.

In February 11, 1950, Narayanan’s father Raman was shot dead in Salem jail. It is said that even Narayanan received twenty two gun shots, and three bullets could not be removed from his body.

A few years after Narayanan went absconding, Sharada got married to another man. In 1957, after Narayanan was released from jail, he was not able to find Sharada. He then married another woman.

After many years, Sharada’s son Bhargavan incidentally met one of Narayanan’s relatives. While discussing about both of their family background and history, Bhargavan realised both the families were related, and also about his mother’s first husband. Bhargavan decided to arrange a meeting between his mother and her first husband.

Sharada lost her second husband 30-years-ago. Two of her six children have also passed away.

Naryanan, who is now a widower, visited Sharada’s home to meet her. Initially hesitant to meet, she finally came out of her room to see Narayanan. However, both did not speak as it was a very emotional moment for both of them.

Before he was set to leave, Narayanan laid his hand on Sharada’s head and told her that he is leaving, while Sarada simply nodded and looked to the ground.

Family and relatives of both Sharada and Narayanan have decided to stay in touch.
