New Delhi: A Telangana district consumer commission has held a courier company deficient in service after a 24.33-kg parcel containing sarees, groceries and other articles sent to the United States was allegedly never delivered to the complainant’s sister.

The Khammam District Consumer Commission directed the courier firm to refund Rs 18,000 paid as courier charges and provide Rs 60,000 as compensation, taking the total payout to Rs 78,000.

Parcel meant for sister never arrived

According to the case details, the complainant had sent the parcel to his sister in the US, reportedly containing sarees intended for her birthday and Christmas celebrations.

Despite repeated follow-ups over several months, the parcel was not delivered to the intended recipient.

The commission noted that the complainant had produced evidence establishing that the parcel had been entrusted to the courier company and that it was not delivered to his sister.

Commission cites mental agony

President V Lalitha and member A Madhavi Latha of the Khammam District Consumer Commission observed that the courier company’s alleged negligence and irresponsible conduct defeated the purpose for which the parcel had been sent.

The commission also noted the mental agony caused to both the complainant and his sister by the failure to deliver the package.

Based on the evidence before it, the consumer panel found deficiency in service and ordered the courier company to compensate the complainant.

Consumer rights in focus

The case highlights the importance of consumers retaining receipts, tracking records and other documents when entrusting valuable parcels to courier companies.

It also underlines that service providers can face liability when their failure to deliver goods causes loss or distress to consumers, subject to the facts and evidence of each case
