A court has directed authorities to monitor the health of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on a daily basis as his hunger strike continues, observing that the life of every citizen is precious and deserves protection.
The direction comes amid growing concern over Wangchuk’s deteriorating health after he reportedly lost more than nine kilograms since beginning his indefinite fast.
Court stresses protection of life
During the hearing, the court emphasised that safeguarding the life and health of every citizen is a constitutional responsibility. It ordered regular medical monitoring to ensure Wangchuk receives appropriate care while continuing his protest.
The Centre informed the court that it would intervene if doctors recommend medical action based on his condition.
Health concerns grow
Wangchuk’s prolonged hunger strike has drawn widespread attention, with reports indicating a significant drop in his body weight over the past 19 days.
Supporters have expressed concern over his health and urged authorities to engage in dialogue over the issues he has raised rather than allowing the situation to worsen.
Government’s response under scrutiny
The Centre has maintained that it will act based on medical advice if Wangchuk’s condition requires intervention. The matter continues to attract public attention, with many calling for both the activist’s health and his demands to receive due consideration.
The case remains under judicial oversight as Wangchuk’s hunger strike continues.
