CHENNAI: In a decisive move against the illegal tobacco trade, city police arrested three men for selling prohibited e-cigarettes in the Thousand Lights locality. Acting under the orders of the Police Commissioner, the crackdown also aimed at curbing the circulation of banned items like gutka.

The arrested were identified as Deepak (22) and Varathan (23) from Tiruvanmiyur, who were caught selling e-cigarettes near Anna Salai. Based on information gathered during their interrogation, the police arrested Mohammed Naseeb (35), a resident of Zam Bazaar and their main supplier. Naseeb was reportedly running a mobile phone store in Royapettah, which doubled as a cover for his bulk procurement and distribution of e-cigarettes with the help of an associate.

Authorities seized 295 e-cigarettes, ₹15,500 in cash, two mobile phones, and two two-wheelers during the operation. All three accused were presented before a magistrate and have been sent to judicial custody.

The police reiterated their commitment to cracking down on the illegal trade of banned tobacco products across Chennai.
