Fresh testimonies have cast serious doubt on the official police version in the Sivaganga custodial death case of 28-year-old B. Ajith Kumar. Witnesses now claim Ajith may have died nearly five hours before the official time of death recorded at 11:15 p.m. on June 28 at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), Madurai.
Auto driver Ayyanar, speaking to the media after deposing before inquiry officer and additional district judge S. John Sundarlal Suresh, revealed that around 6 p.m., he was approached near the Bathrakaliamman temple by police and temple staff who said someone needed emergency help. He was asked to bring his vehicle, and transported an unconscious Ajith to the Thiruppuvanam Government Hospital (GH), where no external injuries were visible.
Dr. Karthikeyan, the duty doctor at Thiruppuvanam GH, confirmed that an unidentified man was declared dead at 6:35 p.m. He said police were asked to place the body in the mortuary, but they removed it soon after, citing instructions from higher-ups.
This sharply contradicts the FIR filed by the accused policemen, which claims Ajith was first taken to Sivaganga Medical College and only later to GRH, where he was “brought dead” at 11:15 p.m. CCTV footage has further revealed that Ajith was driven to multiple locations in Thiruppuvanam instead of the police station, raising suspicions of illegal detention and torture.
Political leaders, including TNCC chief K. Selvaperunthagai and BJP’s Nainar Nagenthran, have demanded accountability. Nagenthran alleged that Ajith was tortured by a rogue special team, while Selvaperunthagai questioned the complainant’s background in the original gold theft case.
