A customer from Thrissur has raised serious concerns about the absence of proper oversight in the food sector after experiencing poor-quality and insufficient portions at a local restaurant. Despite lodging complaints with the Legal Metrology and Food Safety Departments, the customer was informed that no legal measures could be taken regarding the small servings or the high prices.

P B Satheesh, a frequent diner at a hotel in Kodakara, was disheartened when he received a masala dosa with a tiny amount of filling, which seemed far smaller than usual. The meal, priced at Rs 74, appeared overpriced for its size. He also complained about being charged Rs 74 for a puri that was as small as a crisp, feeling deceived by the pricing.

Both government bodies, the Legal Metrology and Food Safety Departments, rejected his complaints. The Legal Metrology Department claimed there was no violation under the applicable laws for food quantity, weight, or pricing in eateries. The Food Safety Department also expressed its inability to act, stating the matter didn’t fall under its jurisdiction.

Satheesh expressed frustration at the lack of action from both departments, despite his efforts to resolve the issue. In contrast, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has led by example, displaying clear pricing and portion details for food items at the Ernakulam South Railway Station.

Satheesh has now called for statewide regulations to ensure transparency and fairness in food pricing across Kerala.
