A 51-year-old cyclist, employed as a Class IV staff member at the Air Force Station, died after being struck by an ambulance that was part of a VIP cavalcade at the lightpoint of Sector 31/Industrial Area, Phase 2 on Saturday evening.

The deceased, Sundar Lal, was critically injured in the collision and was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32), where he succumbed to his injuries.

CCTV footage under scrutiny

Police said the incident occurred around 5.45 pm when the cavalcade was heading towards Chandigarh airport in Mohali. Traffic personnel and local police were deployed along the route.

According to officials, CCTV footage revealed that Sundar Lal allegedly entered the road from the wrong side despite it being closed for the VIP movement. An ambulance in the convoy reportedly attempted to apply brakes 20 to 25 metres before impact but could not avoid the collision.

The body has been kept in the mortuary of GMCH-32 for post-mortem. Police stated that the family has not yet filed a formal complaint and will take a decision after the deceased’s brother arrives from Bengaluru.
