The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced early Monday that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm, officially named Cyclone Montha. The system is expected to bring widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of South Karnataka over the coming days.

Bengaluru weather forecast

In Bengaluru, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rain in the next 12 hours, accompanied by cloudy skies. The city’s maximum temperature is expected to hover around 29°C, while the minimum will likely stay near 21°C.
Light to moderate rainfall is expected throughout the week, prompting a yellow alert across several Karnataka districts on October 28.

Cyclone Montha landfall

According to IMD scientist S. Jagannath Kumar, the system is likely to strengthen further into a severe cyclonic storm before making landfall.

“A severe cyclonic storm is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal and make landfall… The storm is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas, and strong winds… A storm surge of up to 1 meter above the astronomical tide is also expected,” Kumar said, as quoted by ANI.

Red alerts have been issued for Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam, and Nellore districts of Andhra Pradesh. The Indian Army and disaster response teams are on standby to assist with relief and evacuation efforts if required.

Landfall details

The IMD said the deep depression is expected to move northwestwards and make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, around Kakinada, as a severe cyclonic storm on the evening or night of October 28.
At landfall, wind speeds are projected to reach 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.

Residents along the east coast have been advised to stay alert and follow official advisories as Cyclone Montha nears the Andhra coastline.
