With wind speeds ranging from 110 to 120 kmph, gusting up to 135 kmph, Cyclone Remal is projected to cross the coasts of West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh, specifically between Sagar Island and Khepupara, around midnight on Sunday.

According to forecasts, the cyclone will significantly impact West Bengal, coastal Bangladesh, Tripura, and parts of northeastern states with heavy rainfall and strong winds.

  1. Cyclone Remal’s formation originated from a low-pressure system over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal.
  2.  The IMD has warned of the cyclone’s increasing intensity, posing threats of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and storm surges. The current warning remains effective until May 28, subject to extension if required.
  3.  Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in coastal districts of West Bengal and heavy to very heavy rainfall in north Odisha on May 26 and 27. Additionally, Assam, Meghalaya, and other northeastern states may experience heavy precipitation on May 27 and 28.
  4. Tripura has been issued ‘orange’ alerts from May 26 to 28, cautioning of thunderstorms, squally winds, and heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across all districts.

  6.  Kolkata airport has announced the suspension of flight operations for 21 hours starting Sunday due to anticipated heavy winds and rainfall.
  7.  Local train services in Sealdah and Howrah divisions connecting Kolkata and adjoining districts have been canceled.
  8.  The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata will suspend cargo and container handling operations for 12 hours from Sunday evening.
