A Czech national was arrested by Goa police after being caught with a Garmin Edge 540 GPS device, which is equipped with a built-in satellite transmitter. This device violated India’s Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1933, which prohibits the use or possession of satellite communication equipment without a valid license. Although the Garmin device does not support direct satellite communication, the presence of a satellite transmitter is still restricted due to national security concerns. The individual failed to present any legal license, leading to the filing of charges.
Authorities have since issued a notice for the accused to appear before the Goa police. This incident highlights the strict regulations around satellite communication in India, where the general public is prohibited from using satellite phones and devices that could potentially threaten national security.
