DC Vidya Kumari K voiced serious concerns over the high number of drug-related cases in the Manipal police station jurisdiction. She revealed that out of more than 97 drug abuse cases in the district, nearly 90% originated from Manipal limits. Chairing the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) district coordination meeting at the deputy commissioner’s office in Rajatadri on Tuesday, she emphasized the increasing vulnerability of youth to drug addiction. She urged institutional officials to prioritize student health by appointing caretakers and fostering a healthy environment. She also directed officials to raise awareness among students about the risks of drug use.

The DC underlined the importance of awareness programs in schools and colleges to educate students about the long-term consequences of drugs. She suggested organizing essay and extempore competitions to engage them further. Additionally, she highlighted the growing problem of drug abuse among laborers and called for counseling efforts to help them break free from these habits.

She also expressed concern over cannabis cultivation near forest fringes and plantations, ordering regular inspections by the agriculture, horticulture, and forest departments. Suspected drug shipments should be examined at postal services, while railway staff must monitor drug activities at stations. The Coastal Security police were instructed to be vigilant regarding drug transportation via beaches.

Manipal police were directed to ensure CCTV coverage in hostels and enforce preventive measures. Strict legal action should be taken against those promoting drug use. Udupi SP Arun K also raised concerns about tobacco product advertisements disguised as mouth fresheners on highways, recommending removal and legal action against the advertisers.
