New Delhi: Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has found an unlikely supporter in former JNU student and current politician Kanhaiya Kumar.
It can be recalled that the actress has been receiving a lot of backlash for visiting the Jawaharlal Nehru University after the recent violent attacks on the students and teachers. Her move has caused a clear division between the people with many people calling for a boycott of her recent release, “Chhapaak”.
While addressing a gathering at a protest rally nea Mandi House in central Delhi, Kumar argued that when Deepika Padukone campaigned for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she was considered a “deshbhakt” (patriot), but when she visited JNU, she became a “deshdrohi” (traitor).
Speaking about Padukone’s visit, he said, “She did not say anything, didn’t shout any slogans or take names. She remained silent, met the injured students and left. And now they (critics) say that they will not watch her film.” He drew the conclusion that if her “haters” are now encouraging others to boycott her films, it means that they have accepted that supporters of the government are involved in the JNU violence.
Attacking the Vice-Chancellor of JNU, he said that it is his job to visit the students and teachers and enquire about their wellbeing. “Deepika Padukone is not the Vice Chancellor of JNU, you are,” he said.
