The Delhi BJP on Wednesday claimed that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked during her weekly Jan Sunvai (public hearing) at her official residence in Civil Lines.
According to a party statement, a man attempted to assault the CM while she was interacting with citizens. He first handed over some papers and then allegedly tried to hit her. Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva condemned the incident, calling it a “serious security lapse” and demanding immediate accountability from the authorities.
Police confirmed that one person, around 35 years old, was apprehended in connection with the incident and taken to the Civil Lines Police Station. An investigation is underway, and officials said further details will be disclosed after inquiry.
The Civil Lines residence serves as the designated venue where the Chief Minister meets residents every week to address public grievances. The BJP maintained that such a breach in a high-security zone raises troubling questions about safety arrangements.
The incident also drew reactions across party lines. Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “extremely unfortunate”. He added, “This raises a larger concern about women’s safety. If the Chief Minister of Delhi is not safe, how can ordinary women or men feel secure?”
The matter is now under police investigation, and opposition leaders are pressing for stricter measures to prevent such lapses in the future.
