New Delhi: The Delhi Cabinet approved the setting up of a Konkani Academy in the national capital on Friday. The body will aim at promoting the Konkani language, said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Taking to Twitter on Friday, the CM wrote, “Congratulations to all Konkani speaking people and all those who love Konkani language. To promote Konkani language, Delhi Cabinet today approved setting up of a Konkani academy in Delhi.”

The Konkani academy will be set up under the Delhi Government’s Department of Art, Culture and Languages for Delhiites to gain exposure to the rich Konkani culture, language, literature and folk arts. According to an official statement, the newly set-up academy will soon be allocated an office space with all the necessary infrastructure, an official statement said.
Konkani an Indo-Aryan language and is spoken by the Konkani people who primarily live in the western coastal region of the country, known as the Konkan region. It is the official language of Goa and is also spoken in parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra. Additionally, Konkani is one of the 22 scheduled languages listed in the Indian Constitution’s 8th Schedule.
It can be recalled that on Sunday, the Delhi Government notified and set up a Tamil academy to promote the Tamil culture and language.
