New Delhi: Delhi High Court judge Justice Valmiki Mehta passed away on Friday, March 1, morning due to a heart attack, the Bar Council here said.

He was cremated at the electric crematorium at Nigambodh Ghat in the evening.

Justice Mehta is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters-in-law.

Since Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Ranjan Gogoia’s daughter is married to one of Justice Mehta’s sons, the CJI did not hold the court on Friday. All the matters listed in the CJI’s court were adjourned.

“The news of the sudden demise of Justice Mehta has come as a shock to the legal fraternity and as a big loss to the Bar and the Bench,” Bar Council of Delhi Chairman K.C. Mittal said in a statement.

Mehta, born in Mumbai on June 6, 1959, assumed office as Additional Judge, Delhi High Court, on April 15, 2009.

He did his schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Visakhapatnam, and completed graduation from Sri Venkateshwara College, Delhi, and LL.B. from the Campus Law Centre of Delhi University.

He started law practice in the Delhi High Court in 1982 after which he was enrolled with the Delhi Bar Council.

He was designated a Senior Advocate on September 22, 2001.
