Atishi Hunger Strike

Delhi: Minister Atishi’s hunger strike, initiated in the presence of Sunita Kejriwal and other AAP leaders, received a significant endorsement from the jailed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Sunita Kejriwal conveyed the Chief Minister’s hope that Atishi’s ‘tapasya’ would bring about positive change, emphasizing the severe water shortages affecting numerous parts of Delhi amid a scorching heatwave.

In recent weeks, Delhi has been battling a severe water crisis, exacerbated by a shortage of raw water, hindering the city’s treatment facilities.

In response, Atishi, alongside AAP MP Sanjay Singh and Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat before launching her ‘Pani Satyagraha’ in Bhogal. This protest aims to pressure Haryana into fulfilling its water supply commitments to Delhi.

Typically, Delhi receives 1005 million gallons per day (MGD) to meet the needs of its residents. However, recent actions by Haryana have drastically reduced this supply, leaving over 2.8 million people facing severe water shortages.

Atishi underscored the worsening situation, noting that Haryana had further reduced the water supply by an additional 100 to 120 MGD in the past two days, intensifying the crisis.

Despite his confinement, Kejriwal expressed concern over the politicization of essential resources like water and called for regional cooperation to alleviate the people’s suffering.

Kejriwal is currently under judicial custody due to allegations related to the excise policy scam. While the Rouse Avenue Court initially granted him bail on June 20, the Delhi High Court has paused his bail following an appeal by the Enforcement Directorate, pending further arguments.
