A disturbing incident from the national capital has renewed concerns over child safety after a 10-year-old girl was allegedly lured and harmed by an e-rickshaw driver in Central Delhi. Police said the case was solved within 12 hours, leading to the arrest of the accused.
Incident reported by hospital
According to police officials, the matter came to light after a hospital alerted authorities on January 11 regarding injuries sustained by a minor girl. The child informed police that on the afternoon of January 10, an unidentified e-rickshaw driver approached her near BL Kapoor Hospital and gained her trust by offering her tea.
She accompanied the man, who allegedly took her to a secluded forested area nearby. Police said the incident occurred inside a small blue-coloured structure. Despite being traumatised, the child provided important information that helped investigators move swiftly.
Crucial clues aid investigation
The girl described the appearance of the suspect and identified his red e-rickshaw with a white roof. Based on her statement, police registered an FIR and launched a large-scale search operation.
A team led by the Prasad Nagar SHO covered nearly 20 square kilometres and searched 22 locations. During the operation, police recovered the girl’s slipper from Ramnath Vij Marg, which helped establish the crime location. CCTV footage from surrounding areas was analysed to track the suspect’s movement.
Accused traced and arrested
After conducting raids at multiple e-rickshaw stands, police traced the suspect near the Rajendra Place petrol pump. The accused, identified as 25-year-old Durgesh, is a resident of Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh.
Police said the e-rickshaw allegedly used in the incident and other material evidence were recovered. The accused has been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway.

Police officials said the swift arrest was possible due to timely reporting, coordinated efforts and the courage shown by the child. The case has once again highlighted the importance of vigilance, public awareness and strong safety mechanisms to protect children in public spaces.
