Delhi, October 11, 2025:
The National Zoological Park (Delhi Zoo), which has been closed since August 30 due to a bird flu outbreak, is expected to reopen in early November. Recent tests conducted across the zoo have shown no active avian influenza infections, prompting officials to submit a reopening proposal to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. If approved, visitors may be allowed entry after October 30.
Bird Flu Outbreak and Containment
The closure was necessitated following an outbreak that led to the deaths of several birds, including painted storks and black-headed ibises. The last confirmed case was reported on September 1.
Since then, the zoo has carried out random sampling across aviaries and enclosures. All tests returned negative, confirming that the outbreak has been contained. Strict biosecurity measures and continuous surveillance were enforced to ensure the health and safety of both animals and staff.
Plans for Reopening
Once the Ministry grants approval, Delhi Zoo plans to welcome visitors back, offering them a chance to experience its diverse collection of 96 species across 176 acres in the heart of the capital. Authorities have reiterated that safety protocols will continue to be enforced to prevent any future outbreaks.
