This afternoon, mild tremors were reported in Delhi and northern parts of India following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan. The quake, with its epicenter located 241 kilometers northeast of Kabul, struck at 14:50:24 IST, with a depth of 220 kilometers.
The National Center for Seismology posted on X, stating, “Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.1, Occurred on 11-01-2024, 14:50:24 IST, Lat: 36.48 & Long: 70.45, Depth: 220 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”
Despite the earthquake’s intensity, there are no immediate reports of injuries or destruction. However, the tremors caused panic among people in Delhi and surrounding areas, leading to reports of furniture shaking.
Afghanistan experiences frequent earthquakes, particularly in the west and center of the country, attributed to the tectonic interaction between the Arabian and Eurasian plates. The region’s vulnerability is exacerbated by the construction of homes, predominantly made of mud and wood, lacking steel or concrete reinforcement. In rural Afghanistan, multi-generational extended families often live together, making communities susceptible to devastation in the event of serious earthquakes.
Last year, a series of earthquakes in Afghanistan claimed more than 1,000 lives. Delhi and the National Capital Region fall under seismic zone IV, heightening their susceptibility to earthquakes.
