New Delhi: Following the remarkable success of the semi-high speed Vande Bharat trains, Indian Railways is gearing up to introduce the nation’s inaugural Vande Metro, aiming to revolutionize intra-city transportation, according to a senior official closely involved in the project.
“Our preparations are in full swing to commence trial runs by July 2024, with the goal of offering its services to the public at the earliest,” stated the official.
Employing cutting-edge technology for rapid acceleration and deceleration, the Vande Metro is designed to facilitate more stops in less time, catering to the diverse travel needs of urban commuters.
“We are targeting a rollout within this year, with testing slated to begin in the next few months. In addition to automatic doors and enhanced comfort, the Vande Metro will boast various new features absent in current metro trains,” the official explained, hinting at forthcoming details and visuals of these innovations.
Railway sources reveal a distinctive coach configuration, with four coaches constituting one unit and a minimum of 12 coaches comprising a complete Vande Metro. Initially, the Railways plans to debut with a minimum of 12 coaches, with the flexibility to scale up to 16 coaches based on route demand.
“At the outset, we will introduce a 12-coach metro, which can be expanded to 16 coaches as per the city’s requirements,” said the official, noting that the selection of the inaugural city for the Vande Metro launch is also underway.
