Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Arvinder Singh Lovely has tendered his resignation from his position, citing various reasons, including the alliance between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the Lok Sabha election 2024.
In his resignation letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Lovely expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to form an alliance with the AAP, a party that he believes was established on the basis of false allegations against the Congress. He stated that despite the opposition from the Delhi Congress Unit, the party proceeded with the alliance, which led to his decision to step down from his role.
Lovely explained the interference from the AICC General Secretary (Delhi In-charge), who allegedly vetoed several decisions made by him as the Delhi Congress Chief. Additionally, he mentioned his discontent with Delhi Congress in-charge Deepak Bawaria, particularly in relation to the selection of candidates for the Lok Sabha seats in Delhi. Notably, there were objections raised by party members regarding the nomination of Kanhaiya Kumar and Udit Raj for the North-East Delhi and North-West Delhi seats respectively.
Lovely expressed his belief that Congress workers would not support Kanhaiya Kumar and advocated for Rajkumar Chauhan to be nominated instead. He said he was unable to protect the interests of the party workers amidst decisions that he disagreed with. He also criticized Kanhaiya Kumar for praising Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and the AAP government’s achievements, which he believed contradicted the purpose of the alliance.
