New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Karnataka government and the state’s police chief following an alleged incident in which a 42-year-old woman was reportedly stripped, paraded naked, tied to an electric pole, and assaulted in Belagavi district. The incident is said to have occurred on December 11 after the woman’s son eloped with a girl who was engaged to someone else, according to Karnataka Police.
The NHRC, taking suo motu cognizance of a media report on December 12, expressed concern over the ‘stereotyped patriarchal approach’ in the incident, considering it a clear violation of the right to life and dignity of the victim. The Commission has issued notices to the chief secretary and director general of police in Karnataka, seeking a detailed report within four weeks. The report should cover the status of the FIR registration, progress in the investigation, any arrests made, compensation under the Victim Compensation Scheme (if paid), and steps taken or planned to prevent such incidents in the state.
Given the seriousness of the matter, the NHRC has instructed its DIG, Investigation, to form a team for an on-spot fact-finding inquiry, with the mandate to submit a report within two weeks.
