Sudha Murty Becomes Rajya Sabha MP in Narayana Murthy’s Presence

Author Sudha Murty took the oath of office as a member of the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, a few days after being nominated to the Upper House of Parliament. Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys and Sudha Murty’s spouse, was present when she took her oath of office in Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s chamber.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Sudha Murty’s nomination and recognized her efforts to the fields of social service, philanthropy, and education.

“I am delighted that the President of India has nominated Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy, and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny,” PM Modi posted on X.

Sudha Murty expressed her pleasure over the responsibility and said she is happy to get a bigger platform to work for the poor. “I’m happy, at the same time I feel I have been given more responsibility. I’ll work at my level best. On a personal level, I am happy that I’m getting a bigger platform to work for the poor..” Sudha Murty told news agency ANI.

After graduating from the Institute of Engineers with highest honors, Sudha Murty went on to the Indian Institute of Science to earn her ME. After starting her career at TELCO, she gave her husband Narayana Murthy ₹10,000 as seed money to launch Infosys, which is currently valued at $80.52 billion.

Sudha Murty is renowned for her contributions to Kannada and English literature due to her busy writing career. She has taken on a variety of responsibilities, such as starting orphanages, actively taking part in programs for rural development, and pushing for the provision of computers and libraries in all Karnataka government schools.

Padma Bhushan in 2023 and Padma Shri in 2006 were given to Sudha Murty.
