Mumbai: In a tragic incident, an elderly man who was standing in a queue to exchange the invalid notes collapsed and died here on Friday.
Vishwanath Vartak (73) was standing in a queue outside a branch of the State Bank of India in Navghar area of Mulund (East) to exchange his notes when he suddenly fell down at around 1.30 PM, they said. Though he was taken to hospital, doctors declared him brought dead.
The sudden demonitisation move by the central government has definitely put the common man in trouble. Due to cash crunch the people across the nation standing in long queues for essential services for hours together has become a common scene.
There has been a mad rush at banks as well the ATMs across the nation. The ATMs which were closed for two days, opened on Friday with people anxious to withdraw the cash. However, the cash withdrawal limit has decreased to Rs 2000 per day. Queues outside banks grew longer as did the confusion and chaos, with all cash vending machines still not functioning despite a two-day break for stocking up new currency notes.
It may be recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced on Tuesday night that Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes will cease to be legal effective from midnight of Tuesday. He said this was aimed at battling the black money menace.
