In a heartbreaking incident, a 28-year-old woman allegedly killed her six-year-old son before taking her own life in Telangana’s Vikarabad district on February 20.

The deceased has been identified as M Gouramma, who had been living at her brother’s residence following her separation from her husband three years ago. The couple had married eight years ago and had one child.

Battling depression after separation

According to family members, Gouramma had been suffering from depression since her separation. She reportedly preferred isolation and avoided social interaction. Relatives stated that she had been experiencing loneliness and health issues while working as a daily wage labourer.

The tragic incident came to light when her brother found her room locked from inside and received no response despite repeated knocking. Suspecting something was wrong, family members forced the door open.

They found the six-year-old boy dead and Gouramma unresponsive. Police later confirmed that she had died by suicide. No suicide note was recovered from the scene.

Police register case

Preliminary investigations suggest that Gouramma may have feared leaving her son alone. However, authorities said further details would emerge only after post-mortem reports and detailed inquiry.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections pertaining to murder and suspicious death. Family members have not expressed suspicion of foul play.

The incident has once again brought attention to the urgent need for mental health awareness and support systems, particularly for women facing emotional distress and social isolation.
