The family of a 69-year-old man who died after collapsing at Indira Gandhi International Airport has alleged that a five-carat diamond ring worn by him went missing during the medical emergency, prompting the Delhi Police to register a case and begin an investigation.
Collapse at Terminal 3 during boarding
According to the FIR, the elderly man, a resident of Rajasthan, was preparing to board a flight to Baku as part of a group tour when he suddenly collapsed in the departure area of Terminal 3 around 4 am on January 4. Airport staff immediately alerted medical personnel, who rushed to the spot and began resuscitation efforts, including CPR.
He was later shifted to the airport’s medical emergency facility, where doctors declared him dead.
Family alleges ring went missing during treatment
The victim’s son told police that his father had been wearing a five-carat diamond ring for nearly three decades. He said the ring was of immense emotional value to the family and particularly to his mother, as it was one of the last personal memories of her husband.
“The ring was present when my father was taken for medical assistance, but it was missing when his belongings were handed over to us,” the son stated in the complaint.
Son says he was denied entry during emergency
Recounting the incident, the son said he had dropped his parents at the terminal earlier and received a distress call from his mother at around 4 am. When he rushed back to the airport, he was not allowed to enter the restricted area due to security protocols.
He said his mother was later brought out in a wheelchair, and the body was handed over to the family around 8.30 am.
Police begin CCTV review
Based on the complaint, airport police registered a case on January 24. Officials said CCTV footage from the departure area and the medical emergency section is being examined to trace the missing ring and establish what happened during the resuscitation process.
The investigation is currently underway.
