A 39-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 17-year-old Class XII student after reportedly telling the teenager, “Die if you truly love my son,” during a confrontation over her relationship with the woman’s son.
The girl died by suicide at her home in Sarkhej on August 31, hours after the alleged confrontation. Police arrested the woman, identified as Neha Gohil, on September 13 based on a complaint from the girl’s family and evidence gathered during the investigation.
Woman allegedly confronted teenager at home
According to the complaint, Gohil and her teenage son went to the girl’s home around noon while her parents were away. The two teenagers were classmates and were reportedly in a relationship.
The girl’s family later reviewed CCTV footage from their residential society. Police said the footage captured the alleged confrontation, which reportedly lasted around 30 minutes.
The complaint alleges that Gohil repeatedly questioned the teenager about her relationship with her son and told her to “die if you truly love my son.” She allegedly also spoke about the family’s reputation and warned that she would return to confront the girl’s parents.
Police register abetment case
Later that day, the teenager’s younger brother reportedly found her unconscious at home. After the funeral and other formalities, her family approached police and alleged that the confrontation had caused the girl severe emotional distress.
Sarkhej police subsequently registered a case under Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to abetment of suicide of a child.
Police said CCTV footage and the family’s complaint formed part of the evidence considered before the arrest. The investigation is continuing, while the allegations against the accused remain subject to the legal process.
