Diljit Dosanjh meets PM Modi, receives backlash from farmers’ protest leaders
On New Year’s Day, singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but his meeting has sparked sharp criticism from protesting farmer leaders. These farmers, who had previously received Dosanjh’s support, questioned his allegiance to their cause after he praised Modi’s leadership and called the encounter a “fantastic start” to the year. The prime minister acknowledged Dosanjh’s rise from modest beginnings to global fame.
Leaders from the ongoing farmers’ movement expressed disappointment, stating that if Dosanjh truly stood with the farmers, he should have joined them at the Sambhu Border to listen to their grievances. Instead, the meeting with the Prime Minister raised concerns about his commitment to their struggle.
In 2020, Dosanjh voiced his support for the farmers’ protest, urging the government to meet their demands and fighting for their rights. He also posted on social media, encouraging people to stand in solidarity with the farmers.
However, his recent meeting with PM Modi, which took place on December 31, 2024, has left many farmers questioning his stance. Jagjit Singh Dallewal, the convener of Samyukta Kisan Morcha, has been on a hunger strike at the Khanouri border demanding the legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops.
While Dosanjh remains supportive of the country’s leadership, his actions have caused division, with the farmers vowing to continue their protests until their demands are met.
