In a surprising turn of events, 122 discontinued Rs 2,000 currency notes, totaling Rs 2.44 lakh, were found in the offering box (hundi) of the Vaikunthapuram Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple near Tenali in Guntur district. This discovery is raising eyebrows, especially since the circulation of Rs 2,000 notes was officially discontinued by the Reserve Bank of India in 2023.

The incident came to light on Thursday when temple officials, along with trust board members and devotees, conducted the routine counting of hundi offerings. Among the usual donations, the invalid Rs 2,000 notes were discovered, leaving the temple staff and devotees astonished.

The unexpected find has sparked curiosity, with many speculating on the donor’s intentions. It remains unclear whether the individual offered the defunct notes with the belief that doing so would bring blessings or if they simply wished to dispose of unusable currency.

This discovery has quickly become a topic of local discussion, as the presence of discontinued currency in a religious offering box raises questions about the motivations behind the act and how such notes continue to circulate despite their withdrawal.
