In a troubling incident in Assam‘s Dhemaji district, a destitute laborer reportedly sold his 25-day-old daughter for ₹30,000, leading to intervention by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which successfully rescued the infant from a doctor’s home. District CWC chairperson Rupali Deka Borgohain confirmed that a complaint has been lodged at the Silapathar police station against the baby’s parents, the buyer, and intermediaries involved in the transaction.
According to the complaint, the baby girl was born on October 4 at Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh. However, her parents, Budhiman Borah and Sabita Borah, absconded shortly after her birth. Borgohain noted that the father works as a daily wage laborer and the family is in dire financial straits. Following the report, Child Helpline Dhemaji conducted an investigation, locating the parents, who were summoned to appear before the CWC but failed to comply.
Reports indicate that the parents later retrieved the child from the hospital and sold her to Pegu Sohoria and her spouse for ₹30,000. The infant was ultimately rescued after officials received a tip about her whereabouts at Dr. Chandrajit Doley’s residence in Silapathar. Authorities have identified two individuals, Bubul Borah and Dilip Saikia, as directly involved in the infant’s sale, and investigations are ongoing.
