In a remarkable medical achievement, a specialist at Graphic Era Hospital has safely delivered a baby after removing 20 fibroids from a pregnant woman’s uterus—marking a rare case in India.

Rare and complex procedure

The surgery was performed by Dr Divya Mishra, a consultant gynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon, on a 34-year-old woman from Dehradun.

Doctors initially detected a few fibroids during pregnancy. However, when the patient was admitted at around eight-and-a-half months with labour pain and high blood pressure, further examination revealed as many as 20 fibroids.

High-risk surgery successfully managed

Such a large number of fibroids significantly increases surgical complexity, especially due to the risk of excessive bleeding. The team had to perform a caesarean delivery while simultaneously removing all fibroids.

Using advanced surgical techniques, the procedure was completed efficiently to minimise blood loss. The largest fibroid measured 8×6 cm, while the smallest was 2×2 cm.

Mother and baby safe

Following the surgery, both the mother and the newborn were reported to be healthy and have since been discharged.

Doctors described the case as highly challenging, noting that it required precision and quick decision-making to ensure a positive outcome.

Significant milestone in medical care

According to the hospital, this is the first reported case in India where 20 fibroids of such size were removed during pregnancy while ensuring safe delivery. Globally, only one similar case has been reported earlier.

The achievement adds to the hospital’s record of handling complex medical procedures with advanced techniques.

Commitment to healthcare outreach

The institution also highlighted its ongoing efforts to deliver healthcare services in remote areas through mobile medical units, providing free treatment, diagnostic tests and medicines.

The case stands as a testament to advancements in medical science and the expertise of healthcare professionals in managing high-risk pregnancies
