A police sub-inspector on leave was arrested for forcibly snatching a patient’s oxygen mask for his mother and attacking hospital staff, security personnel, and police officers at a government hospital in Lalgola, Murshidabad, on Tuesday night.
Accused Asraful Sheikh of Birbhum police, allegedly intoxicated, stormed into Krishnapur Rural Hospital around 10pm, demanding urgent treatment for his ailing mother. Ignoring reassurances from nurses, he forcibly removed a patient’s oxygen mask and placed it on his mother. When medical staff intervened, he reportedly assaulted them.
Security was called, but Sheikh allegedly attacked two civic volunteers before thrashing police officers who arrived to control the situation. A police officer and two civic volunteers sustained injuries and were hospitalized. Sheikh was arrested along with five family members, including his newlywed wife and father.
Birbhum SP Amandeep confirmed Sheikh’s suspension, while ASP Jaspreet Singh condemned his actions. A suo motu case was filed, along with a complaint from hospital authorities.
Sheikh, once posted as an OC at multiple stations, was in the DIB unit but on leave for his wedding. He was produced in court and remanded to 14 days in police custody.
