The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) of Ernakulam district has initiated plans to rejuvenate two prominent tourist destinations and refurbish a popular tourist facility. Tenders have been issued for three major projects: upgrading Prakriti Gramam at Ezhattumukham, developing Beach Park at Munambam, and renovating the Take-a-Break refreshment centre at Ernakulam boat jetty.
The Take-a-Break facility, inaugurated in September 2017, was among 20 such centres established statewide by the tourism department. Each centre features a snack bar, ATM, unisex restrooms, resting areas, and parking. However, the Ernakulam boat jetty facility gradually fell into disuse and ceased operations over time.
Recognising growing demand for its revival, the DTPC has called for tenders to renovate, modernise, and manage the facility. DTPC secretary Lijo Joseph described the centre’s current poor condition but expressed optimism, stating, “Situated in the city’s core, it holds great potential to serve tourists visiting Kochi and will be made operational soon.”
Prakriti Gramam, a nature-themed attraction launched in 2015 on irrigation department land in Ezhattumukham, has become a notable tourist hotspot. Johny Maippan, ward member of Ezhattumukham in Karukutty panchayat, highlighted the presence of tree houses (erumadoms) and the nearby Ezhattumukham-Thumboormuzhi suspension bridge over the Chalakudy River. Unfortunately, neglect has led to the decay of these features, including rusting guardrails on the bridge.
Despite this, the site draws an average daily footfall generating approximately Rs 40,000 in revenue. The DTPC’s upcoming project seeks to renovate the park and install essential amenities to boost tourist appeal, especially given its popularity as a weekend destination en route to Athirappilly.
The Beach Park at Munambam, located along Ernakulam’s coastline, also holds significant promise. Presently offering water sports, the DTPC plans to expand facilities, including upgraded restrooms, food courts, play zones, and activity areas. With the state government encouraging private sector participation, DTPC aims to develop the beach park under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
These revitalisation efforts underline DTPC’s commitment to enhancing Ernakulam’s tourism infrastructure and drawing more visitors to the district’s scenic locales.
