Kolkata – The highly anticipated Durand Cup derby between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, originally scheduled for August 18, was cancelled on August 21 following a security advisory from local authorities. The decision was made after Kolkata police informed tournament organizers of their inability to provide adequate security for the 85,000-capacity stadium.
The cancellation came as a result of the majority of Kolkata’s police force being deployed to manage the aftermath of a high-profile rape-murder case earlier in the month, which had led to widespread protests and heightened security concerns. This case, involving the RG Kar Medical College, had strained local law enforcement resources, leaving insufficient personnel to ensure safety at the football match.
Debashis Dutta, a senior official from Mohun Bagan, confirmed the cancellation, stating that the decision was communicated verbally and no official notification had been issued by the tournament committee. “We have been informed verbally about the derby’s cancellation but are still awaiting formal confirmation,” Dutta said.
Despite the match being cancelled, Kolkata’s football clubs have united in response to the tragic incident. Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan Sporting clubs organized a joint march to protest against the rape-murder case, calling for stringent action against the perpetrators. This show of solidarity highlights the broader community’s commitment to addressing and condemning such heinous crimes.
The cancellation of the derby has sparked disappointment among football fans, who were eagerly anticipating the high-stakes clash between the city’s major rivals. The rescheduling of the match and further developments will be awaited as the situation unfolds.
