An eight-month pregnant woman allegedly died by suicide in Punjab after facing sustained distress and harassment, prompting police to register a case of abetment against her husband. The incident has once again drawn attention to dowry-related cruelty and domestic violence against young women.
Woman found hanging at home
The deceased has been identified as Gursharan Kaur (24). According to police, she was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside her matrimonial home on Tuesday. The IT City Police Station has registered a case against her husband, Daljeet Singh, under charges of abetment to suicide and launched a detailed investigation.
Mother alleges dowry harassment
In her complaint, Gursharan’s mother, Balbir Kaur, stated that her daughter was married to Daljeet Singh, a resident of Seshan Majra village, about ten months ago. She alleged that soon after the wedding, Gursharan was subjected to physical assault and mental harassment.
“She repeatedly told us that she was being beaten and harassed for dowry,” Balbir Kaur told the police. Despite being aware of the abuse, the family tried to counsel their daughter and urged her to preserve her marriage, she said.
Husband left woman alone at home
Police said that on the day of the incident, Daljeet Singh had taken his wife to a doctor in the morning for medication. In the afternoon, he reportedly returned home briefly before leaving again, claiming he was going to perform sewa at a langar. At the time, Gursharan was alone at home.
Later in the evening, when he returned, Daljeet Singh allegedly found his wife hanging in a room and informed the police control room.
Body sent for post-mortem
Police personnel reached the spot, took the body into custody, and sent it to the Civil Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the woman’s death and to verify the allegations of dowry harassment.
Officials said statements from family members and neighbours are being recorded as part of the probe.
Call for stronger action
The incident has sparked concern among women’s rights advocates, who have reiterated the need for stricter enforcement of laws against dowry and domestic abuse, especially in cases involving pregnant women.
Police said appropriate legal action will follow based on evidence collected during the investigation.
