An 88-year-old woman who had been undergoing treatment after sustaining serious injuries in an alleged assault by her son succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as V. Santha, a resident of Palliyamoola in Kannur district. Police had earlier arrested her son, Sajeevan (58), in connection with the incident.
Alleged assault following dispute
According to police sources, the incident occurred around 11 pm on Wednesday following a dispute between the mother and son. It is alleged that Sajeevan, who was under the influence of alcohol at the time, threw his mother along with the chair she was sitting on during the altercation.
The elderly woman suffered severe injuries in the fall. Hearing the commotion, local residents rushed to the house and immediately shifted her to a nearby private hospital for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, her condition remained critical, and she passed away on Tuesday.
Police investigation underway
Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. With the victim’s death, further legal proceedings are expected to follow.
The incident has shocked residents of the locality, with neighbours expressing grief over the tragic turn of events. Authorities have urged the public to report instances of domestic violence and substance abuse to prevent similar tragedies.
