A 65-year-old woman was found brutally murdered inside her residence in the Nowshera area of Srinagar on Thursday, triggering shock and fear among local residents. Police have launched an intensive manhunt for the victim’s domestic help, who is suspected to be involved in the killing.

Body found with throat slit

The deceased has been identified as Rashida Begum (65), wife of Lateef Ahmad Gangoo, a resident of Mud Bagh. Officials said her body was discovered inside her house with her throat slit, indicating a violent assault.

Upon receiving information about the incident, a police team from Police Station Soura rushed to the spot and secured the area. Preliminary investigation suggested foul play, following which senior officers were informed.

Domestic help under suspicion

According to officials, initial findings indicate that the woman’s domestic help, a resident of Assam, is suspected to have committed the crime and fled from the scene immediately after the incident. Police said efforts are underway to trace his movements and establish his last known location.

“The accused is on the run, and multiple teams have been formed to nab him at the earliest,” an official said, adding that CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined as part of the investigation.

Body sent for post-mortem

The victim’s body was shifted to SKIMS Soura for medico-legal formalities and post-mortem examination. Police said the autopsy report will help determine the exact cause and timing of death, which is crucial to the probe.

Investigation continues

A case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway to establish the motive behind the killing. Police have appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could help trace the suspect.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of elderly individuals living at home and the need for stronger verification and monitoring of domestic workers.
