An 80-year-old woman was tied up inside her house and robbed of gold ornaments and cash in a daring daylight burglary at Rajakumari in Rajakkad on Tuesday morning, triggering concern among residents over the safety of elderly people living alone.

The victim, Mariyakutty, a native of Nadumattam, was alone at her residence when the incident occurred around 9.30 am, police said.

Gang poses as visitors to gain entry

According to police, a gang comprising one woman and two men allegedly gained entry into the house on the pretext of asking for drinking water. When Mariyakutty went inside to fetch water, the trio reportedly followed her into the house.

She was then tied to a dining table using a shawl, leaving her helpless as the accused ransacked the house and fled with valuables.

Gold and cash stolen

Family members said the burglars made away with one-and-a-half sovereigns of gold, including three rings, and ₹5,000 in cash. After the gang left, Mariyakutty managed to free herself and raised an alarm.

She alerted workers who were loading timber nearby, following which the matter was reported to the Rajakkad police.

Police probe underway

Police rushed to the spot and conducted a search in the surrounding areas, but no suspects were traced immediately. An abandoned motorcycle was recovered from the vicinity, which police believe may be linked to the accused.

Investigators are currently examining CCTV footage from nearby locations to identify the suspects and track their escape route.

Rising concern over elderly safety

The incident has caused fear among residents, particularly senior citizens living alone in rural areas. Locals have urged police to increase patrolling and awareness to prevent such crimes.

Police have registered a case and assured that efforts are being intensified to nab those responsible at the earliest.
