The Election Commission of India (ECI) will announce the polling schedule for the Bihar Assembly elections at 4 pm today (October 6). According to sources, the upcoming elections are likely to be conducted in fewer phases compared to previous years.

The Commission’s decision follows a detailed review of logistical and security arrangements during its recent visit to Bihar. Feedback from political parties has also been a key factor influencing the final schedule.

Polls may be held in fewer phases

Sources indicated that the Commission has decided to reduce the number of polling phases to ensure a smoother and faster election process. The move aims to streamline deployment of security forces and reduce administrative pressure on election machinery.

In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, polling was conducted in three phases between October and November. This time, officials suggest the Commission could opt for one or two phases, depending on logistical feasibility and security inputs.

Political parties seek early polls after Chhath

During a meeting with the Election Commission on Saturday, both the ruling and opposition parties urged for the polls to be conducted soon after the Chhath festival, which begins on October 25.

While the ruling NDA demanded a single-phase election, citing administrative efficiency, the Opposition urged for the exercise to be held in two phases to allow greater voter participation and better coverage in flood-prone areas.

Political observers said the ECI’s decision to shorten the polling schedule could also be aimed at minimising election fatigue and ensuring timely formation of the next government.

Official announcement expected today

The official press conference will be held at the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi, where Chief Election Commissioner and other senior officials are expected to outline the detailed polling schedule, including dates of nomination, voting, and counting.

With this announcement, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) will immediately come into effect across Bihar.

The upcoming Bihar Assembly polls will be a crucial political test for both the ruling NDA, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and the Opposition bloc, which has been seeking to consolidate its strength ahead of the 2026 Lok Sabha elections.
