An elephant calf that fell into an abandoned 20-foot-deep well in Dakshina Kannada district has been found stable, as forest officials continue a carefully planned rescue operation.
The incident occurred in the Sampaje range of Sullia taluk in the Western Ghats region, where the calf reportedly slipped into the uncovered well.
Calf alert and stable
Officials said the young elephant appeared alert and in stable condition despite the fall, bringing relief to rescue personnel and local residents gathered nearby.
The calf has reportedly remained responsive throughout the operation.
Forest team on site
A 10-member rescue team led by Manjunath has been working since early morning to safely free the animal.
As an immediate support measure, forest staff have been sprinkling water into the well to keep the calf hydrated and reduce stress.
Ramp being built for safe escape
To ensure a safe rescue, two excavators have been deployed at the site.
Officials said machinery is being used carefully to dig around the well and create a gradual earthen ramp, allowing the calf to climb out naturally without panic or injury.
Cautious operation in sensitive terrain
Forest authorities said the rescue is progressing steadily but cautiously due to the terrain and the need to avoid frightening the calf.
They expressed confidence that the animal would be brought out safely if operations continue smoothly.
The incident has once again highlighted the danger posed by abandoned open wells in wildlife zones of Dakshina Kannada.
