New Delhi: On Friday at 10:30 AM, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna’s bench convened to hear multiple cases, including the much-discussed India’s Got Latent controversy involving well-known YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as ‘BeerBiceps.’
Representing Allahbadia was Abhinav Chandrachud, a Bombay High Court advocate and son of former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. Though he had not argued in the Supreme Court for over eight years, his appearance drew significant attention.
Who is Abhinav Chandrachud?
Belonging to an influential legal family, Chandrachud’s father previously served as the Chief Justice of India. Despite his father’s stature, Abhinav consciously avoided Supreme Court cases during his tenure. An academic and author, he holds law degrees from Stanford and Harvard, where he was a Dana Scholar. His books, including Republic of Rhetoric and Supreme Whispers, offer deep insights into Indian constitutional law.
The Controversy
Mumbai Police summoned Allahbadia over alleged offensive remarks made on comedian Samay Raina’s now-deleted YouTube show. When he failed to appear, authorities issued a second notice. Assam and Maharashtra police visited his residence, only to find it locked.
The investigation extends to other YouTubers, including Ashish Chanchlani and Jaspreet Singh. While the Supreme Court has yet to fix a hearing date, Chandrachud has stepped in as legal counsel for Allahbadia.
