Kolkata, West Bengal (October 15):
A second-year student of a private engineering college in Kolkata has been arrested for allegedly raping his classmate, police confirmed on Tuesday. The incident took place in the Anandapur area in the southern part of the city.
According to police, the survivor, who had come to West Bengal from another state to pursue her engineering studies, filed a complaint at the Anandapur Police Station. In her statement, she alleged that the accused, who is her classmate, spiked her drink with drugs, causing her to lose consciousness, and then sexually assaulted her.
Complaint and investigation
A senior police officer said that based on the woman’s complaint, the accused was taken into custody soon after the incident came to light. “We have arrested the student and registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including provisions related to rape and administering intoxicants,” the officer said.
The woman was later taken for medical examination, and police have begun collecting forensic evidence to corroborate her statement. Officials added that both the complainant and the accused are students of the same institution, though the name of the college has not been disclosed to protect the survivor’s identity.
Police withhold details for survivor’s safety
Authorities have refrained from sharing personal details, including the home state of the survivor, citing legal and privacy concerns. “We are following due procedure and ensuring that the survivor receives necessary counselling and support,” the officer added.
The investigation is ongoing, and police said the accused is being interrogated to determine whether any other individuals were involved or had prior knowledge of the crime.
Growing concern over campus safety
The incident has reignited discussions about student safety on college campuses in Kolkata and across India. Student groups and women’s organisations have demanded stricter monitoring and awareness programmes to prevent sexual violence in educational institutions.
College authorities have stated that they are cooperating fully with the police in the ongoing investigation.
Conclusion
As the inquiry progresses, the police emphasised that maintaining confidentiality and protecting the survivor’s identity remain their top priorities. The accused remains in custody while further evidence is being gathered.
