A 19-year-old engineering student died by suicide at a private college hostel along the Vandalur–Kelambakkam road on Thursday night, police said. The incident has triggered concern among students and educators over academic stress and mental health support on campuses.

The deceased has been identified as Abrin Rafiq, a native of Kerala, who was pursuing his studies at a private engineering college in the Chengalpattu district.

Barred from exams, deeply distressed

According to police, Abrin had been barred from appearing for the ongoing semester examinations due to insufficient attendance and alleged involvement in academic malpractices. Officials said he was deeply upset following the decision.

On Thursday night, around midnight, Abrin reportedly jumped from the 15th floor of the college hostel building. Some students who witnessed the incident immediately alerted the hostel warden, who then informed the police.

Declared dead, probe under way

Police reached the spot soon after and informed Abrin’s parents about the tragedy. The body was later sent to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is under way to ascertain all circumstances leading to the incident. Police said they are also speaking to fellow students and college authorities as part of the inquiry.

Renewed focus on student mental health

The incident has once again highlighted the intense academic pressure faced by students, particularly those studying away from home. Mental health experts have repeatedly stressed the need for counselling systems, early intervention, and compassionate academic grievance redressal mechanisms in educational institutions.

Authorities have urged students facing emotional distress to seek timely help and speak to family members, friends, or trained professionals.
