A 21-year-old engineering student was killed and four others injured after an unexploded device detonated during a trek near the Anumanthapuram firing range under Singaperumal Koil police limits.

Police identified the deceased as Emansu Yadav, a fourth-year student of a private engineering college.

Blast during trek

According to police, the incident took place around 5.30 pm on Monday when a group of six students climbed a hill near the firing range without permission.

The students had reportedly travelled on three two-wheelers and reached the hilltop during their trek.

Iron object exploded

Officials said the group noticed a strange iron object at the site.

One of the students allegedly kicked the object, which hit a rock and exploded.

Police suspect it was an unexploded device left behind from firing range activity.

Four others injured

Four students sustained injuries in the blast and were rushed for medical treatment.

Authorities are expected to assess their condition and provide further updates.

Safety concerns raised

The incident has raised serious concerns over access to restricted zones and the presence of unexploded materials near training ranges.

Police have launched an investigation into how the students entered the area and whether warning systems were adequate.
