Chennai: A social media message posted by Edappadi K Palaniswami has triggered fresh political speculation in Tamil Nadu amid the ongoing uncertainty over government formation following the Assembly election results.

Without naming any political party directly, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader congratulated the “party forming the government” in the state, prompting discussions over whether actor-politician Vijay and his party may have secured enough support to form the next government.

“In the recently concluded 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, candidates from various political parties contested and emerged victorious. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the party forming the government in Tamil Nadu,” Palaniswami wrote on X.

Vijay-led TVK emerges as single-largest party

The statement assumes significance as it comes amid a closely contested political situation in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam reportedly emerged as the single-largest party with 107 seats but remained short of the majority mark of 118.

Subsequently, the Indian National Congress extended support to TVK, while the Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) also reportedly backed Vijay’s bid to form the government.

Political sources indicated that opposition parties viewed support for TVK as a move to prevent political instability and avoid the possibility of President’s Rule in the state.

VCK stance seen as crucial

Attention has now shifted towards the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi led by Thol Thirumavalavan, whose decision is expected to play a crucial role in determining whether Vijay can comfortably cross the majority mark.

Political observers said Palaniswami’s carefully worded message may indicate growing confidence within opposition circles that TVK could already be close to securing the required numbers through behind-the-scenes negotiations.

The post has intensified speculation regarding possible backchannel discussions among various anti-DMK political forces seeking to avoid a prolonged constitutional and political deadlock in Tamil Nadu.

Political uncertainty continues

The race to form the next government has evolved into an intense political contest over the past two days, with reports of negotiations involving smaller parties, discussions over ministerial portfolios and efforts to consolidate legislative support.

Vijay has reportedly made multiple visits to Raj Bhavan to stake claim before Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.

Sources indicated that the Governor has sought formal proof of majority support before inviting any party to form the government.

Meanwhile, comments by an AIADMK Member of Parliament earlier claiming that “my leader will become CM” have further fuelled speculation over possible alternative political equations being explored behind the scenes.

Tamil Nadu political landscape remains fluid

With smaller parties now holding the balance of power, Tamil Nadu’s post-election political landscape remains highly fluid.

Analysts said the coming days are likely to be crucial in determining whether Vijay can successfully convert TVK’s electoral performance into a governing coalition.

The outcome could significantly reshape Tamil Nadu politics, particularly given Vijay’s emergence as a major political force in his first Assembly election campaign.

As negotiations continue, all eyes remain on the final positions of undecided allies and the Governor’s next move regarding government formation.
