Ernakulam district in Kerala has reported 11 confirmed cases and 134 suspected cases of H1N1 since January 2024, according to a press release from the district medical office on Saturday. The outbreak has resulted in three deaths so far this year.

The release emphasizes the importance of seeking medical care if symptoms of H1N1 persist or worsen. Symptoms to watch for include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Immediate specialist treatment is advised if the common cold does not subside within two days or if symptoms escalate. Delaying treatment can lead to severe illness or death.

H1N1 spreads through airborne germs released when an infected person sneezes or coughs. Precautions include covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing or coughing, washing hands frequently, and avoiding crowded places. The disease is particularly serious for pregnant women, individuals with kidney or heart conditions, diabetes, and other serious illnesses. Effective treatment is available free of charge at all government hospitals.

The release also notes that infected individuals should avoid public places like schools and offices, and self-medication is discouraged. If symptoms are present, consulting a doctor is crucial. The district health authorities stress the need for prompt action to manage and contain the outbreak.
