A tragic incident occurred at the Greater Chennai Corporation’s bio-CNG plant in Manali on Saturday night, when an explosion killed a 25-year-old worker and left another critically injured. The blast, believed to be triggered by a suspected gas leak, led to a massive fire and the collapse of the control room’s roof. The explosion occurred while workers were inside the control room, causing thick smoke to engulf the plant.
Police and fire rescue teams swiftly responded to the emergency, rescuing two workers trapped under the debris. The victims, Saravanakumar, a 25-year-old machine operator from Namakkal, and Baskaran, also 25, were on night duty. Saravanakumar succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital, while Baskaran remains in critical condition at Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital.
The plant, which processes solid waste from five zones of Greater Chennai, has been operational for two years under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Authorities suspect that a gas leak might have been the cause of the explosion. Fire and rescue personnel continue to investigate the incident.
Residents of the nearby area reported breathing difficulties after the blast, with some expressing concern about the potential for greater casualties had the explosion occurred during daytime when the plant is busier. Local legislator K P Shankar visited the site, and police have registered a case to determine the exact cause of the explosion and prevent future incidents.
