Security agencies were put on alert on New Year’s Eve after a car carrying a large quantity of explosives was intercepted in Tonk, police officials said.
A Maruti Ciaz vehicle was found to be carrying 150 kilograms of illegal ammonium nitrate, concealed in bags of urea fertiliser. Police also recovered around 200 explosive cartridges and six bundles of safety fuse wire, measuring approximately 1,100 metres, from the vehicle.
Tip-off leads to swift action
Police said they received specific intelligence that explosives were being transported from Bundi to Tonk. Acting on the information, teams set up a blockade on key routes and began checking vehicles.
During the operation, officers stopped a suspicious car matching the description provided in the alert. A detailed search of the vehicle led to the recovery of the explosive material hidden under fertiliser bags, apparently to avoid detection.
Two arrested, interrogation underway
Two people travelling in the vehicle were arrested on the spot. Police said both suspects are being interrogated to ascertain the source of the explosives, their intended destination and possible links to organised networks involved in illegal mining or other unlawful activities.
Senior officials said the quantity of ammonium nitrate recovered was substantial and could have caused serious damage if misused.
Investigation widens
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Explosives Act and other applicable laws. Forensic teams have been called in to examine the seized material, while investigators are checking whether the explosives were diverted from licensed sources or procured illegally.
Police are also examining mobile phone records and transport routes to identify other individuals who may be involved in the supply chain.
Security heightened
Following the seizure, security has been tightened in Tonk and neighbouring districts, particularly in view of New Year celebrations. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement or activity.
Officials said further arrests are possible as the investigation progresses.
