In a major breakthrough, Karumathampatti police arrested a 30-year-old man from Dharmapuri on Sunday for carrying counterfeit currency. The suspect, M Elavarasan of Indira Nagar near Krishnapuram, was caught red-handed after a tip-off.
Elavarasan, along with four others, had tried to lure a car driver named A Muthukumar from Ayyampalayam, Tirupur district, into a fake investment deal. They promised Muthukumar ₹2 lakh in return for a ₹50,000 investment — a scheme too good to be true. Sensing something suspicious, Muthukumar alerted the police.
Acting swiftly, the Karumathampatti police detained Elavarasan and seized a car loaded with fake notes — 13 bundles of ₹2,000 and five bundles of ₹500 denominations. In addition, officers found 17 bundles of uncut ₹2,000 notes and 13 bundles of uncut ₹500 notes, indicating possible local printing.
Police have now launched a manhunt for the remaining accused: Udhayakumar, Dhaya alias Kumaresan, Loganathan, and Senthil. Two special teams have been formed to track and arrest them.
Investigators are also probing the source of the counterfeit notes and whether the gang had links beyond the region.
This arrest sheds light on an active fake currency racket preying on unsuspecting individuals with get-rich-quick schemes.
