KASARAGOD: One week after 24-year-old Ambili P P, a third-year MBBS student at Ernakulam Medical College, was found dead in her hostel room, her grieving family from Padna, Kasaragod, has accused her three roommates and the warden of sustained physical and mental abuse.

Ambili, a brilliant student and first-rank holder in her first year, hailed from a humble background—her father a waiter, her mother a tailor. According to her family, her dream of becoming a doctor was shattered by constant torment from hostel roommates who allegedly mocked her modest roots. Her mother, Geetha P P, in a complaint to Kalamassery police, named one student and the warden—a faculty member from the dermatology department—for intimidation and negligence.

The tragedy occurred on the night of April 5. However, a troubling discrepancy has emerged: though the college informed the family of Ambili’s suicide around 11 pm, her WhatsApp status showed activity until 2:12 am. This inconsistency, highlighted in the family’s complaint, demands a deeper investigation. The complaint has also been forwarded to the Chief Minister and State Police Chief.

Ambili’s relatives recalled her resilience. Despite initially enrolling in an Ayurveda course, she secretly reattempted medical entrance exams and earned a coveted MBBS seat—her family’s pride. But life in the hostel turned into a nightmare. From planted suicide notes to false theft accusations, she faced systematic bullying. Even after being isolated, no action was taken against the perpetrators.

Her uncle, Ramachandran P P, said, “She wasn’t weak. But their cruelty broke her.”
